How Skin Camouflage Works - Cover Scars, Vitiligo & Skin Differences

Skin camouflage products are designed to reduce the visibility of many skin differences once the area has fully healed. People often search for answers like “How do I cover a surgical scar?” or “How can I hide red patches on my face?” — this page explains what camouflage creams can and cannot do.

Important: Camouflage products can only change the colour of an area. They do not flatten raised scars or change skin texture, although certain products may soften the look of uneven surfaces.

Scarring and Injury‑Related Conditions

Surgical or accident scars
  • Self‑harm scars
  • Burns and graft edges
  • Scars from skin conditions or disease
  • Cleft lip scars
  • Scars from acts of violence or trauma
Camouflage creams can help blend the colour with surrounding skin but cannot make raised scars flush with the skin

Pigmentation & Discolouration

  • Vitiligo (hypopigmentation) and leucoderma
  • Melasma / chloasma (dark patches)
  • Ephelides (freckles)
  • Solar lentigo (age spots)
  • Xanthelasma (yellow patches around the eyes)
  • Neurofibromatosis café‑au‑lait marks

Camouflage helps by matching pigment to your natural skin tone, making patches less noticeable.
Vitiligo can be left uncovered however some people prefer to cover it using skin camouflage creams - Skin camouflage expert Phil Briggs shows them how
Vitiligo can be left uncovered but some choose to cover, especially if newly diagnosed

Redness & Vascular Conditions

  • Rosacea and flushing/blushing
  • Kaposi’s sarcoma
  • Telangiectasia (thread veins)
  • Spider naevus
  • Plaque psoriasis

These conditions often cause persistent redness. A carefully matched cream can neutralise the colour, though texture changes remain.

Other Conditions

  • Acne erythema and scarring (colour can be blended; texture may remain uneven)
  • Discoid lupus erythematosus
  • Stretch marks (striae)
  • Port‑wine stains (vascular birthmarks)

Can Skin Camouflage Help You?

If your skin has healed and there are no open areas, camouflage creams can likely reduce the visibility of discoloration. However, please keep in mind:
  • Colour can be altered; texture cannot
  • Your confidence can improve significantly when you find the right product
  • Consultations are carried out in natural daylight and require on average, 90 minutes (can be longer) to match and teach application
